View Full Version : 3rd Gen Car Audio
Darrenscamaro 10-22-2008, 08:49 AM Hey guys I am going to be starting to put a sound system in my 3rd gen. If any of you have a custom set up in the hatch or some simple tips that may help me get a all around better sound lets hear them! Im looking for a nice crisp clear sound with some bass.
87camaro 10-22-2008, 03:15 PM The set up that I had at one point was I cut a piece of wood the shape of the "well" in the back, so it fits right over it. put some nice subs back there, with an amp on the wood between the subs. I covered the wood with speaker "carpet". It sounded great, good bass!
Hope it helps
Darrenscamaro 10-22-2008, 07:35 PM Did you use the "well" as the bottomof the box? So basically cut a piece of MDF to fit over the gap and put 2 subs down into it?
87camaro 10-22-2008, 08:40 PM Yup. Here is a picture of like what I had. (found it on car domain) But this guy actually has the whole thing boxed in (down in the well) I didn't, but I think it would have sounded better being totally enclosed w/ wood.

and the attachment is what the back of it would look like (without the total enclosure)
Darrenscamaro 10-23-2008, 08:54 AM Yea thats what i thought you were refering too. Actually doesnt look too bad and I'd assume it sound alright too. I'm thinking about trying my hand out at building a box to fit down in the well but flush with the ledges. I'll let everyone know how that project turns out.
Anyone have any input on whats the best speaker (brand) to go with. All around in the car from the 4x6's in the dash all the way back to the subs. Also has anyone added speakers in their 3rd gen if so where? I just dont think 4 speakers and a sub or two is going to be enough.
DukeOfHurl 10-23-2008, 09:12 PM I have a "bazooka" type sub in the back of mine. It was an off brand that I only paid like $50 for 7 or 8 years ago. It wasn't very impressive or put out much bass but it did make the music louder and give it some definition. It came with a turn dial to control its volume with I mounted below the cigarrette lighter. I guess that's where the fog light switch would be if I had them.
Darrenscamaro 10-24-2008, 12:37 AM Yea if you look in my photo's I do have a little 10inch Infinity sub back there right now. I just hate the way it looks but it does add to the sound quality and gives it a nice touch of bass. In these cars it does not take much, but I want to build somehting that looks nice and is presentable not only for the bass and sound quality.
Darrenscamaro 10-28-2008, 10:34 PM hey guys I'm just wondering if anyone is selling any car audio? I am looking for anything and everything. Interior speakers, subs, amps, or a camaro box. I just figured before I went to buy new I'd see if anyone had anything lying around.
Darrenscamaro 11-19-2008, 03:09 PM Glad to see this forum back up and running! I was getting a little worries there...anyhow in the meantime I have been busy with the audio system in my car. Here are a few pictures of the work I have done, let me know what you all think...

Hey, Thanks for the comments and props. It was a lot of hard work and more involved then I orginally thought. I'll post pics of the finished job.

DukeOfHurl 11-21-2008, 09:39 PM Awesome job on the box! Looks like alot of difficult angles. I bet the sound of that thing is going to pay off for how much of a pia that must have been to build.

Darrenscamaro 11-25-2008, 10:20 AM Hey thanks for the comments guys... I am looking for some opinions here now. I am thinking about putting a logo or design on the box in between the two subs...Something that says camaro or 25th anniversary or the camaro logo or something. Any ideas, or pictures come to mind?
Thanks, Darren
DukeOfHurl 11-25-2008, 10:56 PM Almost looks like you knew what you were doing when you built it ;). I think some kind of 25th anniv. logo would really set it off. Especially if it has some red in it to tie into the red in the rest of the interior.

Haha Ill take that as a compliment on the box then! Yea actually I had no idea what I was getting into but I think it played out really nice. I am for sure going with some kind of red decal to compliment the red interior I am just looking for the right design or lettering. I would love to do something that shows off the 25th anniversary heritage of my car so thats the route that I am looking into!
