View Full Version : General Tech question
Darrenscamaro 10-23-2008, 09:07 AM Hey guys as you know I have a 1992 Camaro RS with a 305 TBI. When I first got the car the engine idle was at 600-800 RPM's I have noticed latley (the past 2 days) that the engine is now idleing around 1200 RPM's. Any idea why this would start to happen? I was told to check my vacum lines so I did, not a single crack or loose end for a leak. Is there anything else I can check that may control or affect the idle? Also I have noticed that my car has been running a little rich. Could these tow things be linked?
DukeOfHurl 10-23-2008, 01:22 PM First thought is a vacuum leak like you mentioned. Sometimes you have to go over every single hose, beginning to end 4 or 5 times until you find it. If your distributor has a vacuum advance that could be getting a little old too. If you are sure there is no vacuum problem then there is an adjustment screw for the idle where the throttle linkage bolts onto the throttle body. The lever that you can pull back to rev the engine will rest on the end of that screw. Back it out a turn or two and see if that drops the idle. If not then the ecm might be compensating for something like the ignition. How old are your plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor and ignition coil? And if you end up doing a tune up, spend the extra $12 for a new fuel filter. They can clog up pretty frequently and easily. I've heard of people having to change fuel filters after only like 6 months because it was clogged. If you run your gas tank almost empty this can clog them too.
Darrenscamaro 10-23-2008, 01:27 PM I am alost positive that there is no vaccum leak but I will look again just in case I missed something. I just recently obtained the car so I have no idea how old any of those parts are, it may be a good idea to do a tune up then. Plugs wires and cap are easy, where is the fuel filter located (I hope not in the tank!). I'll be looking at all of this tonight after work so I'll let you know what I find out. Thanks for the help
DukeOfHurl 10-23-2008, 01:49 PM On my car it is under the car just inside of the driver's side rocker extension. Basically it is right below your left leg as you sit in the driver's seat. Make sure you release the fuel pressure b4 you take the fuel lines off or things get messy. On my car there is a schrader valve like on your tires that sits on the fuel rail. TBI is a different setup but you should see something like this near the throttle body. You can also turn the car on and pull the fuse to the fuel pump and let it "run out of gas". If you do find the valve on the motor you may want to cover it with a rag when you depress the valve or you will get a face full of gas. :446: One more thing, when you change the fuel filter double check that you have arrow pointed towards the motor or it won't work so good.
Darrenscamaro 10-23-2008, 01:56 PM Yea I know exatcly what you are talking about and where it is (the fueld release valve that is). I think I'll just go ahead and check the vaccum lines and do a tune up on her tonight to see what helps as well as a filter. Shouldnt take me long so i'll post the results. One more thing since you seem to know how it all works lol, would the idleing problem make my car run richer? Or is there something else that could be causing this one? If it helps all the emissions and I mean all have been removed from my car!
DukeOfHurl 10-23-2008, 02:02 PM My car was running rich too b4. I hadn't been able to track down why yet, but it could be any number of things. Throttle position sensor, O2 sensor, MAF or MAP sensor and the list goes on and on. Basically the ecm is adding fuel because of something not working properly. You might want to take it to the parts store and see if they will scan your codes for you. It should be free of charge. Or you can buy a scanner.
Darrenscamaro 10-23-2008, 02:06 PM Yea I did that I scanned it and of course no codes! Go figure. lol My car has no 02 sensors, no cats, no emission sensors of any sort. It was all removed by previous owner and capped off. I was told that there was a senor on the passenger side of the block that may be going bad, something about it thinking the engine is always cold so it dumps more fuel in to get it to warm up or something. I dont remember I'll look something up and see if I can find out what that was called.
Darrenscamaro 10-23-2008, 02:08 PM CTS Sensor! That was what he called it. Coolant temperature sensor. Would what he said be true if it thinks the engine is running cold to dump more fuel into the engine?
DukeOfHurl 10-23-2008, 09:01 PM I'm not sure dude. I'm no mechanic and that's something I haven't done on my car b4. I guess it would be worth a shot sense I think those little sensors are only like $10 at O'Reilly's. It should look something like this

Or this

These are like generic sensors that can be used for coolant, oil, or air temp. I just replaced the one on the plenum for my TPI.
Darrenscamaro 10-24-2008, 12:34 AM Thanks for the info, I completed a tune up tonight and fuel filter and I'll tell you its like a new car. Running totally different and really well. Did not really help the idle issue but I did play with the throttle body screw that did raise and lower the idle but I couldnt find that happy medium idle lol. It got pretty cold the later I was out there messing with it so i'll be back on it tomarrow or this Saturday. I'll keep it posted, but I will be trying to replace that sensor since it is only $10.99 at a local auto store. Its worth a shot and it is prolly something that could be needed replacing anyhow.
DukeOfHurl 10-24-2008, 08:52 PM Yeah it's amazing what a tune-up can do for your ride. That's why a tune-up is alaways recommended b4 you start modding.
Darrenscamaro 10-25-2008, 01:47 AM Next I will be looking into replacing that air cleaner of mine, I am going to start looking around in the morning. I have to start cleaning up that engine bay! Make it look nice and start getting some better performance out of it, its going to be a fun winter!
